Advancing Long Duration Energy Storage for Europe

Accelerating Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) uptake across Europe through an open-source platform for grid operators, policymakers, project developers & regulators

Powering Europe’s Energy Transition with Long-Duration Energy Storage

As Europe strives for climate neutrality and the uptake of renewable energy sources increases, LDES technologies play a central role in this transition: they can store renewable energy over long periods of time, provide backup for intermittent supply, help address seasonal storage gaps, and increase electricity grid reliability.

However, the system currently lacks the tools to assess LDES’s techno-economic viability and grid impact; investment and deployment remain limited.

AVANGUARD will address these gaps by building a free, open-source digital platform to give stakeholders the tools to evaluate, plan and design LDES technologies across the continent. The project will draw on shared data and will be tested across Use Cases in four European regions.
